Engine Features

A single-phase DC motor includes a vacuum pump and carbon brushes which will eventually wear off and need to be replaced. Filtration Types

How to Choose a Dust Collector

Destination and scope of application. First, you need to decide where and how the unit will be used as well as what kind of tasks will it have to do. If you need to remove dry dust and the work will be periodic, then an entry-level model will do. If you have a large amount of work and the amount of material to be collected, three-phase DC will be more suitable.

The main criteria to be considered when choosing a vacuum cleaner are as follows:

  • The scope of application;
  • Filtration level;
  • Productivity (discharge and airflow);
  • Safety degree;
  • Vacuum cleaner housing type (e.g. stainless steel when working with corrosive materials).

Some people say that large stationary units are still better than portable dust collectors. So if you are still thinking about buying one and you don’t have any space issues in your workshop, moving the collector outside will not be necessary – high-quality cartridge filters in modern cyclone systems do their work great.

How to clean dust collector filters?

First of all, you should check your instruction manual. Various filters require various cleaning. Some can be blown down with compressed air (you can use STIHL BR600 leaf blower, for instance) 3-4 times a year. Some filters have special swivel bars to get rid of the dust. Some dust collector sets come with bristle brushes to clean the outside of the filter frame.

If your filter material is woven fabric (not paper), you can simply take it outside and rinse it with water using a garden hose, then leave it to dry out. However, not all filters can handle water, so make sure yours is the one that can.

Also, if your differential pressure gets higher than recommended (for your set), you should replace the filter. Keep in mind that the cleaning system of your DC may not able to clean the filters anymore, so it’s time for a replacement.

You can easily find a lot of rollers with similar homemade cyclones. You will need certain accessories like a 5-gallon high-density plastic bucket with a top, polypropylene sewage outlet at 90 degrees (40 mm diameter), utility knife, construction adhesive, rubber couplings, and a crown.

First of all, drill or carefully cut a through-hole for the tube in the center of the bucket lid. A second opening should be closer to the edge of the lid, where the rigid rib is. If you don’t have a special crown, you first pierce the circumference and carefully cut it with a utility knife. Use a round file to process the hole.

Two sewage outlets are inserted into these openings. To hold them securely and without any additional air supply, they are better glued on. To do this, first, treat the edges of the tube with sandpaper or file to create a roughened surface. Do the same with the lid.

After that, insert a tube into the lid and apply a thick layer of adhesive with a hot air gun. Don’t spare the glue – this will help create a good seal in the spots and seal all the gaps tight. You will need a durable plastic bucket with a tight lid, utility knife, 2.5″ 45-degree PVC pipe, 2.5″ 90-degree PVC pipe, 2.5″ to 1.75″ coupling, 2 hoses, 4 little screws, construction adhesive, and hot glue. Screw the screws into the hose for the perfect fit. Trace top hole Use 45-degree PVC to trace the upper opening. Drill a hole. Finish cut using a utility knife, check if it’s snug. Use hot glue to glue in place (apply to both sides of the cover). Take your step-down coupler (you can use a 2.5″ to 1.75″ coupler).

Measure the hose you have. Cut hose to fit inside the coupler. Clean cut with a knife. Heat the hose to make it easier to stuff into the coupler. Glue before pushing a hose into a PVC coupler. Make sure the coupler faces the right way. Measure your elbow diameter near the top of the bucket.

Cut the hole just like your previous cut on the lid. Set the 90-degree elbow to create the cyclone effect. Hot glue in place on the inside/outside of the bucket. Let it dry. Empty your shop vacuum. Attach shop vac hose to the lid of the dust collector. Attach the suction hose/coupler to the side 90-degree intake. Test it out.

How to make dust collector cyclone?

You will need the following tools:

  • Connect the elbow on the lid and the filter outlet.
