How to Pick the Dust Collectors for Your House in 2018?

All carpenters know that the biggest issue they face is dust. Even when there are great dust extraction fans installed, the potential for particle and dust accumulation on a work surface is great. That is why dust collection units are considered to be a must in any woodwork shop.

Types of Dust Collectors

There are mainly two types of cyclone dust collectors on the market, the single stage unit, and the two-stage unit.

Single Stage Dust Collector

These are the bag dust collectors, and they use an impeller to suck up large particles. These units are the less expensive models of the two types. These are found in woodshops since they are both cheap and great for woodchips.

Two Stage Dust Collector (Cyclone Dust Collector)

These are the cyclone dust collectors that we talk about, they start by creating a strong suction to separate the larger particles from the airflow, and the finer particles are blown away into a separate canister. The fine dust is separated from the air by fine dust bags.

Cyclone dust collectors are either mobile or fixed, and they do come in a number of sizes. They have a hose attachment that you locate over the area you want to collect from, and they create a mini “cyclone” effect within their housing to create a vacuum that sucks in the dust and particles that are close to the hose aperture.

Instead of discussing the engineering feats of a cyclone dust collector, let’s jump straight into the guide for the 13 best cyclone dust collectors that we tested among the many that we found.

For reference comparison we define four parameters that will make choosing the until most suitable for you, they are Size, Filtration, Capacity and Suction Strength.

The size of the unit will determine if it fits into your workshop, the filtration level will decide what size of particles the unit can suck up, the capacity is how much dust you can collect in a bag, and the suction strength is essentially the operational power of the unit.

Introduction

JET’s DC-1200VX-CK1 dust collector is a very powerful unit, and it features a 2HP 1PH 230-volt motor connected to an impressive 2-micron canister kit, that can actually catch up to 1-micron elements too. 4. Oneida Air Systems Dust Deputy Deluxe Cyclone Separator Kit

Quality85%
Durability84%
Practicality 84%
Price83%

Introduction

Let’s start by stating that this unit does not actually suck up the dust; it’s a separator add-on that separates wet from dry. This means you need a vacuum unit to attach to this. The vacuum unit must be able to work at a range of 50 to 150CFM.

Now to the unit itself. This is a great separator, that will take all your particles out from any source, dry or wet atmosphere and remove most of the particles from the incoming air flow. Once the larger particles have been separated, the filter unit in your vacuum will be able to handle the remaining microns of dust, reducing any chances of clogging.

This Anti-Static Dust Deputy® Cyclone Separator will basically make any cyclone vacuum unit last longer, and this model comes with the following features:

  • 3′ x 2.5″ Static Dissipative Hose
  • Two 90 Degree Static Conductive Hose Elbow Adapters
  • 5″ – 2.5″ Quick-Release Hose/Band Clamp
  • Three 1.5″ Non-Marking Casters Wheels
  • Neoprene Foam Gasket and Mounting Hardware

This model will also work with the following particle sources:

Wood Chips and Shavings, Sanding Dust, Drywall Dust, Concrete Dust, Clay and Silica Dust, Granular Powders, Grass Clippings and Leaves, Bakery Dust and Flour, Cooled Ash and Soot, Stones and Gravel, Soil/Dirt, Water, Pet/Animal Hair, Metal Scraps and Shavings, Grinding Dust and Debris, Agricultural Waste, Pharmaceutical Waste and more.

Size: 12” x 29.2” x 12”

Filtration: N/A

Capacity: 5 Gallons

Suction Power: Recommended to work with 50–150 CFM

Introduction

I am closing with something different. Sure, it’s a dust collector, but not the one you would normally find in a workshop. However, this is a great unit for additional cleaning power in mobile job sites. When you get to work in all kinds of places, bringing your tools to perform onsite woodwork or any dust creation work, you might want a portable dust collection unit powerful enough to clean the air and the room.

Size: 24” x 16’ (feet)

This is primarily a fireman’s tool for clearing out smoke and large dust clouds caused by falling debris but is a great unit to have as part of your health and safety equipment on site too.

This is an MVU, a mobile ventilation unit. Check out the video of this unit’s larger brother sucking out smoke fast and efficiently.

Conclusions

These are the top 14 dust collectors, and the bonus item is a must-have safety implement, especially in woodwork shops that are potential fire hazards. We reached this list after conducting on-site testing as well as reviewing selling and customer review statistics.
