Trimming your backyard is sometimes an onerous job, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right tools and equipment, trimming can be fun. This is where a corded trimmer comes into play. These versatile devices are powerful tools that never fail you when handled correctly.
A cordless electric trimmer has some advantages over a corded or gas model, and these advantages include:
- Weight: Cordless electric trimers don’t have that fuel pack for the internal combustion engine, nor do they have that pesky cord, so you get a concentrated handle to trimmer unit, that is streamlined and easy to pick and operate.
- Noise: Cordless electric trimmers are quieter since they are electric, and do not have an internal combustion engine.
- Power: Cordless electric trimmers are connected a rechargeable electricity supply, so you get fast recharges between jobs.
- Green: Cordless electric trimmers do not release toxic fumes from gas.
- Ease of Use: Since it’s cordless, its lightweight, and much more versatile and mobile in your hands without cords getting in the way.
The advantages of a cordless electric trimmer outweigh the disadvantages, and if you don’t like dealing with fuel/gas engines, or long electricity cords tangling up the way, then a cordless electric trimmer is the only way to go.

Cordless Electric String Trimmer – A Choosing Guide
To be honest, nothing beats a good cordless electric trimmer, even when you consider the battery power supply implications. Yes, batteries are heavier than corded models, and yes, batteries run down for recharging, but. Cordless electric trimmers are so manipulative and versatile and green, and with the constant advances in battery technology being led by the electric car industry, power packs are becoming lighter and lasting longer. This makes a cordless electric trimmer to become extremely competitive with corded or gas-powered units.
There are two types of battery to choose from, both are rechargeable, but when buying a new model only purchase a Lithium Ion model, do not buy a Nickel Cadmium battery pack.
While Ni-Cad battery-powered trimmers are the least expensive of the cordless models. Ni-Cad batteries are heavy, and they have a noticeable drop-off in power and performance as the battery runs down. Also, Ni-Cad batteries are the past and are considered inferior to the Li batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are constantly evolving due to the intense competition in the car industry, between full electronic vehicles (EV’s) and hybrids. EV’s and hybrids use Lithium-Ion batteries, and billions of dollars of research have gone into their development.
As such, equipment manufacturers are reaping the rewards from this global innovation drive and using Li-ion batteries in their devices. Li-ion batteries are lighter by 50% compared to Ni-Cad batteries. They are more powerful, and last longer than Ni-Cad batteries, in fact, they 200% more efficient than the Ni-Cad’s, and recharge much faster. They also come in a diverse number of packs that include:18-volts, 20-volts, 24-volts, 40-volts, 56-volts, 80-volts, or 82-volts.
There are two types of the shaft, and these include the curved and straight models.
The curved shaft models are slowly being phased out, and today it is hard to find them. Straight shafts, with telescopic functionality, are now becoming the main rage. The reason curved shafts are disappearing is due to the maneuverability of angle heads that can now adjust automatically to 90 degrees, making a curved shaft obsolete.
Straight shafts are made of high-grade aluminum alloys, you don’t need more than this, and steel is much more corrosive and heavier than a good aluminum extrusion. Only cheap Chinese models come with non-telescopic steel shafts so don’t by it if it’s not aluminum.
There are three basic functions you want to see in your trimmer:
The simplest of devices come with only one function, trimming. The more advanced come with two functions; trimming and edging, and the most advanced come with three functions. However, you don’t need a mowing function if you have a very large lawn. The mowing function is mainly used by professionals when maintaining large estates and see lawn patches that need fine-tuning.
